KOD Recap

By: Austin Prim

This is going to be short, sweet and to the point. KOD was more of the same. This album was just another wheel added to spin inside the ever-turning hamster wheel that Cole’s albums continue to run in circles on. No progression. No risks taken. Nothing different, just more of the same. I’ve told you what the problem with J. Cole is already; beat selection, and subject matter. It’s mundane, monotone, redundant, repetitive, anticlimactic, stagnant etc. The only difference between KOD and previous albums are the added 808s and use of trap-like hi-hats. That’s about it.

Cole has always been a great rapper. I love artists with a message, but, there’s a limit! Someone tweeted “You can be a rapper of intelligence and substance and still produce music that doesn’t put people to sleep.” That’s a perfect summation of my issue with Jermaine. He’s so focused on making sure that the medicine he’s prescribing is going to help his patients, that he’s ignoring the fact that he has to persuade people to take it. If you have the cure for an ailment that most people have, but drowsiness is a side effect, people can only take it at certain times. You can’t take the medicine before you drive, when you’re out with friends, nor when you have work to do. You can only take it before bed. J. Cole’s albums contains therapies for a lot of diseases in hip-hop as well as the black community, but the side effects aren’t worth the trouble. It limits the reach.

Artists like Kendrick, Big K.R.I.T., Nipsey Hussle and even Logic have messages in their music. But the beat selection and the delivery of the message is more welcoming than Cole’s. I wanted to enjoy this album. I wanted this to be the outlier in Cole’s track-record of the same old, same old thing. It wasn’t. Listen to the album. If you like it, great! If you don’t like it, I understand. This is not a bad album. It’s…it’s just…boring.

Wynne AKA Queen Hunnypot

Staff Writer-Orian Johnson

It’s August 9th of 2017, you log onto Twitter and your timeline is filled with quote tweets of somebody freestyling. Surprise, it’s flames. Wynne AKA: Queen Hunnypot is a 20 year old rapper from Portland who went viral last summer and hasn’t dropped the ball on releasing more music for her fans to love. Since she dropped her freestyle to the Bank Account instrumental she’s released two tracks, An Open Letter To Donald Trump, and CVTVLYST, which has a music video on youtube.

She’s also released a Gucci Gang remix and a Batman remix, both of of which are surprise, flames. Wynne just throws in bars that might go over your head the first listen, and she’s extremely transparent about her views and opinions, something a lot of lyrical rap lovers will value. Every one of her songs including the two remixes are on Soundcloud as well as her website, sinawynne.com so with all that said go listen! Here’s hoping for more music from her in the future.

Rikki Blu

Rikki Blu is a rapper hailing from Pleasant Grove. He’s killing anybody that steps in his way to success. Thankfully for all the other DFW rappers, they’re smart enough to stay out of his way.

Rikki Blu is one of my favorite rappers, not just locally; but, globally, simply because he is so raw and real, two concepts that get lost in the limelight. Fortunately, Rikki is able to remember the people that helped get him to the top, his fans.

Rikki Blu has a sound unique to himself that is very hard hitting and emotional. His EP “Pleasant Grove” is a perfect example of all of this. He explains his experiences growing up in the rough neighborhood of Pleasant Grove and all that goes along with it. He has such an open, no BS approach to this project, and you can’t help but to connect to him.

Water.jpg

Image: Cover art of Water

His most popular record, and my personal favorite, Water, is simply titled for a reason. It has a simple message that accompanies it; we have to help each other get to the top. With the assistance of his producer, TrapGrazeTragik, he is able to relay this message loud and clear. Rikki’s gift of lyricism is what allows him to be so successful, and he proves it with every single he releases.

Rikki Blu proved his top shelf lyrics in his addition to the hit hashtag #DallasLyrisictChallenge where he spit his freestyle and amazed everyone, friends and foe alike.

This is one artist that you should not sleep on. Check out as much of his stuff as you can, you will not be disappointed!

The Most Underrated Rappers on Youtube

Writer: Cinceir Holmes

From 2pac and Biggie, to Lil Uzi and Lil Yatchy, rap to others has evolved or devolved in anyone’s opinion. Rap and hip hop being our two main music genres in our generation everybody wants to be a rapper. At the end of the day though we all have that one friend with bars for days and then there are those with bars for eternity. We also have Youtubers who make us think, “MAN why doesn’t he or she have a record deal yet?” today I’m gonna put you on to my personal top 5 lyricist who I deserve a bigger fanbase.

Joyner Lucas

Joyner Lucas is a amazing artist with impeccable flow. Along with his different styles he has mastered the way of telling two sides of a story through one song while also sending a message out. You can never say he is too deep or he is too hype this man keeps putting out songs with styles you’ll never expect. He keeps us all on the edge of our seat. His new album (508) 507-2209 keeps him high on the list as well. Here are some of my personal favorites.

  1. Winter Blues
  2. Ross Capicchioni
  3. Sorry

Street Light

A young artist still coming up Street has been in comedic vids with DashieXp and working with other artist on this list like Shizzy Vl. Through his storytelling music he gives off so many different vibes that’s it crazy. Taking real life events from his own experience or not he puts it all into a track. To add on to this he is also a Christian rapper so he is educational, inspirational, lyrical, and above all else family friendly. I suggest you check out his latest project DARK SUMMER.

  1. Bully
  2. August 6th
  3. Brother.

Shizzy Vl

Vl Seconds, Poseidon, Shizzy Vl, or the Anime Rap God; this artist goes by many names but under anyone of them he can still kill any beat. Starting his YouTube career through freestyles based off cartoons, anime, video games, or even comics; Shizzy is a young man from Brooklyn making a way through music. Growing up he was a bullied kid and uses his experience in his music. He may not be family friendly like Street Light but he is just as lyrical if not more so. He keeps his music honest but also can change between a slow or fast flow along with softer or stronger lyrics. He’s worked with Street Light, Devvon Terrell and many more.

  1. Dear Father
  2. Boondocks freestyle
  3. The Gawd
  4. Hakai

Bugatti Beez

Bugatti Beez is one of those different artist of the generation. He started off on YouTube doing skits, and comedy videos. Later on in his career he started making music even doing a song with Futuristic. With a great flow and hard hitting lyrics along with his unexpected skills in the art of hip hop he is a force to be reckoned with.

  1. Gang$ta
  2. Donuts In The Lambo
  3. Wassup ft Futuristic

Bengii Worth

bengii 1.jpg

Image:InstaDoor

Bengii Worth is a Dallas rapper (AKA One Time Bray of the rap group, JVNLS)

whose raspy voice and dope ass lyrics are some of the most hard hitting in the metroplex.

Bengii Worth, or Bengemin Bray, is an Arlington native that helped make the rap group JVNLS back in 2013. His flow is the kind of crafty found in Childish Gambino’s music and ability to use word play to get his point across. Although Bengii is a part of JVNLS, he still releases his own solo records. One of those being his most popular track to date, ”Nash”.

Nash.jpg

Cover art for Nash

Nash is titled after the star basketball player Steve Nash, who is referenced multiple times throughout his rhymes. Nash has a beat that will get you hyped to do anything from take a test, talk to your crush, or of course, play an intense game of ball with the homies. It features one of the JVNLS star rappers, Stoney the User, whose high pitched voice is a great contrast to Bengii’s raspy sound.

Bengii Worth is full of incredible records that cause you to start dancing in your seat like “42”, “Sugacoat”, and “Used To”. Although Bengii doesn’t have a full EP released, all of his singles and projects with JVNLS keep us only wishing that he did have one. Keep up with this young talent on Twitter @inBRAYwetrust.
