Line: UCLA -3

Holy Offense, both teams come into week 3 averaging lllover 35 points and 415 yards per game. UCLA QB Josh Rosen has been on fire so far throwing for 820 yards and 9 TD’s with 0 INT’s. Wow. Memphis will have to keep the scoring up if they want a shot.

Aaron: UCLA Andrew: UCLA

Cover games

Aaron: My cover team this week is UNT, +21.5 @ Iowa. The Mean Green are going to spread out and move the ball quickly. Iowa is clearly more talented on both sides of the ball but can they stop UNT QB Mason Fine?

Andrew: I’m going with SMU +19.5 to cover @ TCU, as mentioned earlier, this rivalry runs deep, and is always a shootout. Playing down the road in Fort Worth, the Mustangs are going to score some points, they should cover if they can contain Kenny Hill.

History of the Headgear

Writer: Andrew Martin

ESPN

FINALLY, College Football is back. Clemson beat Alabama in a thrilling National championship game to end the 2016-17 season last year, and ever since then we’ve been patiently waiting for a new season. Here we are now at the beginning of September with a new season kicking off, and with that new season comes one of the most watched sports television shows, College Gameday.

Anyone that loves college football knows all about College Gameday, it started in 1987 and has since become the number one Saturday show to watch on ESPN. While the show is hosted by Rece Davis, and has past athletes like Desmond Howard, Kirk Herbstreit, and David Pollack apart of the cast, the true star of the show is Lee Corso. Corso is the only member on the cast that was a part of the original premiere for gameday in 1987, and he may be the reason that most people watch. Corso is known as the loveable and eldest man on the show, and while Corso is a very smart analyst and offers insightful information throughout the program every week, it’s all about what he does at the end of the show that draws in viewers. On October 5th, 1996 College Gameday visited Columbus, Ohio for the Ohio State vs Penn State game, at the end of the show they went around the table each making their prediction for the game as they do every show. When it was Corso’s turn he decided to do something a little different to make his pick, he grabbed the Ohio State mascot head and put it on, the crowd absolutely loved it and ever since that moment the headgear selection has become a tradition for every show.

Detroit Sports Nation

Entering the 2017-18 season College Gameday will make their first trip of the year to Atlanta as number three Florida State takes on number one Alabama in a great week one contest. College football junkies are excited for a football filled day kicking off with Gameday in the morning, and with the first gameday of the year comes the first headgear selection of the year. Corso will be choosing between FSU and Bama, and I predict that the Alabama elephant will be the first piece of headgear put on by Lee Corso this season.

The Power of the Mustache

There are little things other than performance-enhancing drugs that can truly take an athlete to the next level. Well, that and a sick mustache. One man who has harnessed and truly displayed the raw might of a well-executed stache is none other than the walk on turned to a two-time Heisman candidate, Baker Mayfield.

The Sooners’ senior quarterback is now going on his third year as the primary slinger of the Oklahoma offense, and he isn’t looking to stop yet. At the end of the past two seasons, the de-facto Big XII Championship game has been played in the season finale against Oklahoma State, and in both of those games Mayfield pulled out a wild card… His Hulk Hogan-esque mustache. As you can guess, it was a decisive victory in both of those years.

Source: Sports Illustrated

The trend began in 2015 as the 10-1 Sooners trotted into Stillwater hoping to punch their ticket to the College Football Playoff with a Big XII Championship under their belt. All they had to do was beat Oklahoma State by any amount and it was theirs. The Bedlam game is always a wildcard though… Take a look back a 2014 for example as the heavily favored Sooners lost in overtime to the Cowboys. With that in mind, Mayfield took it upon himself to bring an edge to the game. In turn, him and his fellow QBs grew out some biker staches and blew the doors off the boys in orange and black.

Mayfield’s excellent mix of his pass and rush attack led him to scoring three touchdowns out of the team’s total of seven in this 58-23 bloodbath. Hell, he even pancaked a defensive back which led to Mixon walking in with the 66 yard TD.

Source: YouTube

If that doesn’t scream Heisman productivity, I don’t know what does, (but I digress). With such an efficient win, this had Mayfield thinking, “Hey, maybe this thing kinda worked.” A calendar year passes, and it has come time for a crucial Bedlam/Big XII Championship game once again. As you may have guessed, the stache made a huge comeback.

After an early season collapse, the Sooners had a chance to finish 10-2 with an undefeated Big XII record and a Sugar Bowl bid. This time, the showdown came back home to the “Palace on the Prairie” in Norman. The Crimson and Cream crusaders did not disappoint dropping the Cowboys 38-20. None of this was possible without the dramatic, drawn-out plays by Mayfield. His passing attacked pulled out a hat trick with 3 TDs including a 69 yard, impromptu BOMB to Dede “TD” Westbrook.

Mayfield had a pretty solid hunch that the Sooners were going to win because as soon as the game ended, he ripped off his pads displaying a homemade “Back to Back” Big XII Champions shirt he had been wearing the whole time.

Source: OU Daily

With the 2017 schedule looking as tough as ever with Ohio State and an additional, actual Big XII Championship Game at Jerry World, it will be fascinating to see how and when Mayfield brings out his glorious stache once again. Until then, we can only predict how the “new Sheriff in town” will perform in his next stache-ified showing.

FIVE DARK HORSE HEISMAN CANDIDATES

Writer: Anthony Aleman

As the collegiate football season swings into action, the yearly discussion about the nation’s most coveted award has also grown tremendously. The Heisman trophy, awarded to Quarterback Lamar Jackson of Louisville last year could potentially find itself another winner this year as many playmakers across the country such as Sam Darnold, Saquon Barkley, and Jackson seem to be the favorites for it. However, we aren’t going to be talking about those players, today the discussion will be centered around the top five dark horse Heisman candidates around the nation. Let’s get right into it.

1. Blake Barnett QB Arizona State University

Barnett, a former Under Armour All American and University of Alabama Quarterback looks to take the Sun Devils to tides never reached before. Losing the Quarterback battle to Jalen Hurts at Alabama last year seems to have lit a fire under Barnett, and under the guidance of Billy Napier and with the help of talent such as N’keal Harry, expect a huge season from Barnett.

2.  Will Grier QB West Virginia University

The former Florida Gator gunslinger looked destined to become one of the next best Florida players in history, but a yearlong suspension for taking banned substances caused that ship to sink. Now a new environment with the same coordinator who helped Johnny Manziel win a Heisman and a high powered up tempo offense should help Griers chances of winning not only the Heisman but also a conference title.

3. Jarrett Stidham QB Auburn University

A former top recruit with a very talented skill set could wreak havoc in the SEC this year after transferring over from Baylor. Stidham has received nothing but rave reviews from coaches and media both, so have high expectations for Stidham and the auburn tigers this year.

4. Trayveon Williams RB Texas A&M

The up and coming running back took charge of a crowded backfield last year for the aggies and was one of the few bright spots last year in what was a lackluster year. With a Quarterback battle brewing between three guys, look for Williams to receive the ball tons of times, whether it’s through a hand off or a pass from the backfield.

5. Shane Buechele QB University of Texas

The freshmen who was supposed to take over the state of texas last year faltered under the Charlie Strong regime, however quarterback and offense guru Tom Herman has now taken the reigns of this team. Buechele will have to adjust to a slightly different offense and have to fend off competition from quarterback Sam Ehlinger, but if Buechele can progress well then look for Texas to become a perennial powerhouse under the dynamic duo of QB and Head Coach.
