Artist Profile: Joji

Writer: Kyle Wheelock

Since the days of Nujabes and J Dilla, lo-fi hip-hop as always had a niche following. With the rise of Soundcloud, Bandcamp, and even Youtube, independent musicians have been able to freely create and share their own music. Enter George “Joji” Miller, an Australian-Japanese producer, singer, and former Youtube giant.

Miller was the mastermind behind Filthy Frank, a character that Miller himself described as, “the embodiment of everything a person should not be”. While portraying this character, Miller became one of the most notable and iconic Youtuber, with his TVFilthyFrank channel boasting 5.6 million subscribers and 694 million views total, all while creating controversial content that many believed didn’t deserve a platform. Despite producing outrageously offensive videos, Miller still found success with his Filthy Frank persona, including releasing a comedy album, Pink Season, which debuted on top of the iTunes chart, a SXSW performance, and even starting the Harlem Shake craze that swept the nation a few years ago (Yep, we got this because of Filthy Frank).

However, all good (or terrible perhaps) things must come to an end, as on December 29, 2017, Miller announced via twitter that he would no longer be creating Filthy Frank videos due to, “serious health concerns” and a general lack of interest in continuing the channel. The news came as a shock to many, but some of his fans could see the writing on the wall. While creating his Filthy Frank content, Miller also produced his own, lo-fi hip-hop beats on Soundcloud under the alias, Joji. These tracks are few and far between (his soundcloud only has twelve tracks with the longest being only 2:59 in length) and was originally intended to be a secret for him and his friends to enjoy. This didn’t last for long, as eventually two songs, “Thom,” and, “You Suck Charlie,” were leaked and discovered by his fanbase, prompting him to take his art and his identity into his own hand, which lead to the release of more singles on his Soundcloud, as well as a commercial EP, In Tongues as well.

In Tongues was released on November 3, 2017 and contains only six tracks (equalling a sixteen minute runtime), but also shows the amount of talent Miller has, as well as the time and care he puts into his production. According to Miller, he has been crafting songs since his early childhood years but never took it seriously until his teenage years, when he began scouring the internet for tutorials and refining his work. All these years of practice have resulted in Miller being able to craft these downtempo beats with interesting sound selections, layered vocals, and beautiful piano loops.

His tracks have a soulful, R&B vibe, something Miller himself describes as, “romantic garbage”. And these tracks definitely fit the romantic part, as a lot of the lyrics focus on a failed relationship, getting over a breakup, an unrequited love, etc. The lyrics are admittedly not super deep or varied, but the compliment the mood of the tracks very nicely without ruining anything. Some standouts from In Tongues include, “Will He”, “Demons”, and “Windows”, so definitely check those out if you wanna get an idea of what Joji is all about (or just check out In Tongues on any streaming platform, it’s six songs). Alternatively, you can browse his Soundcloud for other gems like, “Thom”, “You Suck Charlie”, or, “i dont wanna waste my time”, all of which feature a grittier sound than anything on In Tongues.

Filthy Frank was, polarizing, to say the least. Millions found him funny, many others found him offensive and tasteless. But whatever your or anyone else’s opinions on Filthy Frank may be, they shouldn’t stop you from giving Joji a chance. His music is emotional and arranged beautifully, due largely in part for Miller’s ear for sampling and sound selection and the overall final product is a pretty solid body of work.

TL; DR: Joji makes good lo-fi beats

Recommendations: Thom, You suck Charlie, i don’t wanna waste my time, Will He, Demons, Windows

Jon Bellion is another singer/songwriter whose music was suggested to me by a friend (rather than me just Googling the most repeated phrase of a song on YouTube when I get home). His music is of the hip hop R&B genre and he has a lot more in terms of content than the other two artists I’ve covered. His channel features his debut album, The Human Condition which made it to number five on the charts in the US in 2016, and two of his four mixtapes: The Definition and The Separation. Scattered Thoughts Vol 1 was his first mixtape which he released in 2011, and Translations Through Speakers came out in 2013. He’s also featured in Beautiful Now by Zedd, Dead Presidents by Travis Mendes, and Obsession by Vice. Bellion’s lyrics range from thought provoking romantic and intimate with songs like An Immigrant to songs that are just him telling a story about his life like Dead Man Walking. Even deeper still, in songs like Human depict the world through his eyes and put the listener in a place where his emotions and experiences are perfectly translated.

Whatever the type of song, there’s power in the lyrics regardless due to the sheer honesty and raw emotion in every line. He makes music perfect for every hopeless romantic out there, including myself. For good reason as well; Jon Bellion started his career as a musician after making the difficult decision during his junior year of high school to ditch basketball for music. After that, it’s no surprise that at a young age his lyrics would reflect how jumbled his emotions must have felt. As for his more recent music, the lyrics give off a much more somber tone, though not necessarily a saddened one. He still has upbeat and happy songs, but he’s simply mature and experienced so much more since that time in his life, which in turn means his outlook on life is reflected in his music. Guillotine, my personal favorite, is a track from TTS about finding somebody who continues to love you for who you are without caring at all about your past and moving from the mistakes you make. You’ve probably heard All Time Low on the radio or in Wing Stop at some point.

Whether you’ve only listened to some or haven’t heard any at all, Jon Bellion is another artist whose music you should tune in to. Check out a few songs from every mixtape and album.

10 Underated Musicians

Writer: Tanya Nasimiyu

With all the diverse and new music coming out this year, there is still an array of musicians who don’t get the credit their music truly deserves. I have curated a list of 10 artists who stepped up to the plate this year with new music that is definitely worth the listen.

Twitter.com @icryduringsex

10. Cuco

Cuco is an L.A singer who makes love songs for hopeless romantics in the digital age. His songs almost sound like an exotic lullaby especially when he adds spanish into the mix. His popularity grew rapidly in the past 6 months and it serves him well because his music is worth the listen.

9. Danger Incorporated

Danger Incorporated is made up of two people, Louie Dufflebags and Boothlord. The two heavily credit artists like Yung Lean for their influence and it can be heard in their sound. The duo recently signed with Awful Records and have gone on their first tour so their come up is not that far.

8. HOMESHAKE

In my opinion, HOMESHAKE makes music for Ikea and Solange fans, but there’s something about his music that is just enchanting. Whether it be his voice or his production that blows it out of the water. HOMESHAKE will be heading out on his sold out tour this fall which is much deserved for his music.

7. Steve Lacy

Not only was he nominated for a grammy at just 16 with his band The Internet, Steve Lacy has worked with Kendrick Lamar and J Cole as well. California heartthrob Steve Lacy makes short guitar ballads that you can dance to and enjoy and his recent EP definitely deserve a listen.

6. Spooky Black/ Corbin

At one point, everyone’s on my twitter was retweeting Spooky Black’s song Without You. After he released his record in 2014 he took a hiatus only to return this year with a song as his real name Corbin. With his smooth production and smooth voice his music without a doubt shouldn’t be left without a listen.

5. Goldlink

Honestly Goldlink never went wrong anywhere. After being a 2015 xxl freshman, he released hit after hit but no one really payed much attention, until this year’s release of his album At What Cost. His single Crew should have been a summer bop especially after the Gucci Mane remix. Remix or no remix, his album truly hit the mark.

4. Noname

Formerly Noname gypsy, Chicago native’s lyricism was heavily noted in her project Telefone. Before making music she was known for her spoken word poems which can be heard in her songs very distinctly. She left a mark by rapping about being marginalized as a black woman but also attaching melodies to it that make it very likeable.

3. CHXPO

CHXPO is my favorite guilty pleasure. Especially when he’s paired with producer Oogiemane. He makes songs that needs to be played in cars and never fails to make a bop with any songs he releases. With his love for anime and bumping lyrics he’s definitely going to go far.

2. Divine Council

Armed with iconic producer Icytwat and rappers Silkmoney, Cyrax and Lord Linco, the group has a killer arsenal to make hits after hits. After Andre 3000 remixing their song recently, popularity has grown for the rap group and hopefully it will encourage them to deliver more hits like the Council World project.

1. Brockhampton

Texas natives Brockhampton is the Odd Future follow up we needed if they went to college and put out music. The group formed on a Kanye West forum and have since moved to L.A to become a self proclaimed “Boy Band”. The group has about 14 members who do different things from photography and videography to rapping and graphic design. With their first album Saturation that just came out this year, they managed to show everything they have and more with killer visuals and killer music to accompany it.

AlxndrSounds

Twitter profile of AlxndrSounds

AlxndrSounds; soultry, smooth, stunning. These are all words I would use to describe the types of sounds that you will hear from this young man. From your first listen to your last, you will undoubtedly feel his struggle and pain in his latest EP, “Kids”.

Alex Stewart-Johnson, also known as AlxndrSounds, is a Texas bred R&B artist that recently graduated from Summit high school and plans on attending University of Central Arkansas in the fall. It’s nearly impossible to detect his young age in his music due to his vulnerability and deep lyrics. In “Kids” he tells all about his struggles of growing up in a broken home and how that affected him.

Dear Dad” is definitely the most heartbreaking track on the EP. Alx lets the listeners into his world with this “dear diary” style song. In it he address the fact that his father seemingly only presented him and his siblings with love and gifts when it pleased him to win them over, and hide the fact that he had other children with different women at the same time.

Dear Dad” is only one of the many amazing tracks Alx has in his arsenal, “That’s life” and “Too Long” are just a few other songs to fall in love with. I chose AlxndSounds to be my “SoundCloud Artist of the Week” because his treble heavy voice and hard hitting beats will have you hypnotized every time.
